Keeping my daughter entertained in the car has always been a challenge.
My son, when he was little, was so easy. Give him his Kindle with a few movies and apps, his DS and some coloring books and crayons and he was golden. All he wanted to do was run around at a couple of rest areas and get some new snacks and he would travel anywhere with you. These days, he doesn’t need much at all, his cell phone, a pillow and he is all in.
My daughter…she’s a different cat. She’s creative and artsy and talkative and wiggly and easily bored. Some rest stops and snacks aren’t going to do it for her.
We are going on a road trip in a few weeks and I am already trying to store my patience to have for the road. She will ask 312, 976 times “Are we there yet?” Trust me. It is coming.
Because we are short on space for this adventure, I’ve already warned her that we are limiting the number of toys and games she can take. She is one of these littles that you need to start early with. She will still try to sneak her entire toy box into the truck, but by starting early talking about it, she will make mental notes about what she really wants to take. When the rubber meats the road, she will take only what she really needs.
For the last week or so, I have been on the hunt for things that will keep her entertained, not take up much space, be easily stored and something that I can play too. Afterall, my main job will be keeping her happy the entire trip. 😊
I found this cool little paper tray in the school section at Target. It will slide easily right under the truck seat. OUT OF THE WAY!!! OUT OF THE WAY!!! OUT OF THE WAY!!! Oh…and I picked up a couple of things from the Dollar Spot that she approved.
Monopoly and Clue travel games came from WALGREENS (I think). I am pretty sure I bought them when they have the BUY 1 GET 2 Free around Christmas last year.
I ordered a 6 pack of vintage card games off Amazon for around $6 (Old Maid, Memory, Matching, Crazy 8s, Go Fish and Slap Jack).
I hit up the Dollar Store for some dice and my MEGA SCORE OF THE DAY. These awesome little snack containers came from the Dollar Store too. They are perfect for keeping the cards and games nice and neat for travel.
Personally, I think I have done well and she will be happy. I found her a book with puzzles, games and coloring pages to take along too.
She may not be entertained for the entire trip but for a good portion of our windshield time, she will be satisfied.
What are your fav ways to entertain your kids in the car?
